The Independent has a great article on the story of Dracula, its historical inspirations, and the cult of Dracula in pop culture:

"The Cannes Film Festival last night got its teeth into a re-release of the classic Hammer version of Bram Stoker's work - complete with scenes judged too gory for audiences in 1958. Ed Caesar and Arifa Akbar report on the premiere, while John Walsh profiles the men who will be forever associated with the vampire count."

The article mentions historical points of interest to Dracula fans including: Vlad the Impaler, The Inspiration For Dracula; Bram Stoker, the author we all owe our devotion to; Nosferatu, The German Dracula; Bela Lugosi, The Hollywood Dracula; Christopher Lee, The Hammer Dracula; and more recent George Hamilton IV, The Comic Dracula, in 'Love At First Bite;" and Gary Oldman, The Francis Ford Coppola Dracula.
Frankly, I think subtle piques of the imagination are better than gore.

Drac's Castle is owned by who??

There's been debate about who's the rightful owner of Bran Castle in Transylvania (Dracula's Castle) since the medieval castle had been confiscated by a communist regime in 1948.

"Culture Minister Adrian Iorgulescu said the castle was legally returned last year to heirs of Princess Ileana, its last owner. He noted that it was approved by the Justice Ministry and a national agency for returning confiscated assets."[source]

It's all well and good that the gothic castle returns to the heirs of Romanian Royals, but how did it get into the hands of a New York-based architect?

Everyone hopes that the castle will become a tourist attraction based upon its medieval splendor but care should be taken lest a couple of New York-based architects get caught into the greedy web of New York-based developers like Louis R. Cappelli. He makes building proposals and then goes way beyond the original proposals/contracts--some people compare him to "Vlad the Impaler" at a glimpse of his gigantic skyscrapers that seem to impale the sky. It would be a shame to trade a beautiful medieval castle for a cluster of modern skyscrapers regardless of who owns the property.

"If you pop a vitamin C tablet in your mouth, it's a good bet it came from China. Indeed, many of the world's vitamins are now made in China.

In less than a decade, China has captured 90 percent of the U.S. market for vitamin C, driving almost everyone else out of business.

Chinese pharmaceutical companies also have taken over much of the world market in the production of antibiotics, analgesics, enzymes and primary amino acids. According to an industry group, China makes 70 percent of the world's penicillin, 50 percent of its aspirin and 35 percent of its acetaminophen (often sold under the brand name Tylenol), as well as the bulk of vitamins A, B12, C and E.

In the wake of a pet food scandal, in which adulterated wheat gluten from China led to the deaths of thousands of pets in North America, and other instances of food and toothpaste tampering, China's vitamin producers are reaching out to reassure U.S. consumers that their vitamins are safe.

Whether that's true isn't clear, however..."

"Last month, after publicity over the poisoning deaths from the cold medicine, a consumer in Panama noticed that toothpaste in a store listed diethylene glycol as an ingredient and notified the authorities. Eventually it was traced to China, and since then countries around the world have been on the lookout for the product.

In addition to the United States and Panama, tainted toothpaste has been found in Australia, the Dominican Republic, Costa Rica, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The agency said Chinese-made brands with diethylene glycol were typically sold at low-cost, 'bargain' retail outlets.

The agency said toothpaste containing diethylene glycol was sold under the names Cooldent Fluoride, Cooldent Spearmint, Cooldent ICE, Dr. Cool, Superdent, Clean Rite, Oralmax Extreme, Oral Bright, Bright Max, and ShiR Fresh Mint."
