Ben & Jerry's Chose the Wrong Name for an Ice Cream Flavor

DUBLIN (Reuters) - Ice cream makers Ben & Jerry's have apologized for causing offence by calling a new flavor "Black & Tan" -- the nickname of a notoriously violent British militia that operated during Ireland's war of independence.[1] ,

The "Black & Tans" were notorious for police brutality in Ireland.

Dominic Behan (1929 - 1989), brother of the famous Irish playwright Brendan Behan, captured the chaos and cruelty in a song entitled, Come Out Ye Black and Tans (Lyrics).

Picture being alive during the chaos and brutality:

I was born on a Dublin street where the Royal drums do beat
And the loving English feet they tramped all over us

This line drives home the cruelty:

...When our heroes of sixteen were executed.[1]

By the way, during this struggle, a person's tongue could be cut out for singing this song.

The "Tans," as they became notoriously known, were unemployed veterans of World War I who took their name from their police/army uniforms of dark green, black and khaki. The force was raised in such a hurry that there was not time to provide them with proper uniforms. In March 1920 Lloyd George sent the "Tans" to Ireland to make it "a hell for rebels to live in." This succeeded as they proceeded to "terrorize the terrorists." On one occasion, a party of "Tans" captured a handful of the enemy at Kerry Pike near Cork, cut off the tongue of one, the nose of another, cut out the heart of a third and smashed the skull of a fourth. [1]

Black & Tan is not a good name for an ice cream flavor.
