"What characterises goths? They are generally aged between 13 and 25. They wear black and purple clothing, and are given to body piercing, tattoos, black eye make-up and blood red lipstick. The girls are odd-looking, too. When I asked a Scotsman colleague what characterised goth behaviour, she told me, 'they are morbid, unhealthy-looking freaks who don't mix with others and sit round looking suicidally depressed.' A shiver ran down my spine. It's The Scotsman features department.

What intrigues me is the persistence of the goth culture. It first emerged in Britain in the late 1970s and early 1980s, rising Phoenix-like from the charred logs of the punk movement, with bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus and Killing Joke. The distinctive dark goth sound arose through bands such as The Sisters of Mercy, Alien Sex Fiend and Fields of the Nephilim. Wow! A few more band names rolled off like this and I'll be drafted on to the Cultural Commission.

There are goth variants such as New Romantic (velvet, lace and brocade) and Cybergoth (marked by electronic techno dance music and clothes combining electronic circuitry and bright neon colours). There is Goth-punk, with its tell-tale punk safety pins and fetish attire. And there are of course the Visigoths. But not having a band, they died out."
