Hotel heiress Paris Hilton, star of "The Simple Life'' reality show, is engaged to Greek shipping heir Paris Latsis, her spokesman said Monday... Latsis is a grandson of John Latsis, the last of Greece's shipping billionaires from the postwar boom years"

Australians should be sensible over Corby - Jakarta

International News Article | Reuters.com:
"Besides calling for a boycott of Bali, some Australians have urged that their donations to the aid effort in tsunami-hit Aceh province be returned.
Officers at the main Bali airport found the cannabis stashed in Corby's bag last year after she arrived from Australia.
Corby has insisted the drugs were stashed somewhere in transit to Bali. Reasonable doubt is insufficient to knock down a charge under Indonesia's legal system."

Powder linked to Corby case: PM
"THERE was a connection between the suspected biological terror attack on the Indonesian embassy and Schapelle Corby, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

The Prime Minister said he had been briefed on the contents of a letter, written in Indonesian, accompanying a bacterial powder sent to the Indonesian ambassador in Canberra yesterday.

Mr Howard refused to detail the contents of the letter but said he had no reason not to believe the attack was linked to Corby's conviction for drug smuggling in Bali."

Scare could ruin Corby's chances
WHOEVER sent the envelope to the Indonesian Embassy could have harmed Schapelle Corby's chances of winning freedom, according to her Indonesian lawyer.

Lily Lubis, who heads Corby's defence team, said she had not told her client about the incident. But she said the convicted drug smuggler would be very sad and worried about it once she found out.

I hope Moscow, London, or Madrid 'wins' the bid for the 2012 Olympics

Sites for previous Olympic games have suffered environmental damage. Why can't one site be chosen for a permanent Winter Games and another for the Summer?
C'mon, who really thinks that New York City can handle an Olympic event?

Olympic vote boosts call for reform: "Although Tony Blair appears determined to defend the first-past-the-post voting system for general elections, he has every reason to be relieved that the host city for the 2012 Oympics is not selected on the same basis.

It will be chosen on a variation of the 'alternative vote', with the least popular bidders dropping out of the race one by one and their supporters choosing between the remaining candidates.

The winner will be the city that finally gathers 50 per cent support among members of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) , who are meeting in Singapore on 6 July."

Tarot cards can predict lottery windfall

Lottery Post: UK Lottery winner 'saw it in tarot'

"A woman who won more than £5 million (US$9.2 million) playing UK Lotto says she saw her win predicted in a tarot reading.
Deborah Mather, 47, from Chorley, Lancashire, bought a ticket for Saturday's Lotto draw after dealing herself the wheel of fortune card.
The mother-of-one thought she might have a £10 win, but instead scooped the £5,150,514 jackpot.
'The cards told me there was a windfall to come - but I didn't think it was going to be this big,' she said.
{snip}
She is now thinking of using some of her millions for a dream move - also predicted in the cards.
'The cards never tell you anything that is not going to happen but I never thought in my wildest dreams it was going to be this.'
Mrs. Mather bought the Lucky Dip ticket with the winning numbers - 12, 18, 22, 33, 43 and 48...

Prince William to travel on Lions rugby tour

Top News Article | Reuters.co.uk: "LONDON (Reuters) - Prince William will join the British and Irish Lions rugby union tour to New Zealand in July to support the team, Clarence House said on Monday."

All bets are off when William leaves the University of St Andrews

The Scotsman - Business - Clock ticking on privacy for Prince William:

"Paddy Harveston, press secretary to the Prince of Wales, confirms that the hands-off deal ends once William leaves full-time education: 'No, there will be no further agreements. Once he leaves University the St Andrews’s agreement is over. The special agreement was purely to cover his education. It ended for Harry when he left Eton and Prince William’s will end when he leaves St Andrews. He will be a senior member of the royal family and we will handle any press interest in him the same way as other members."

Time to pull up your pants

This is a relief. The low-rider jeans had dipped way too low. Girls, is exposing the crack of your butt in good taste at all?

The Daily Telegraph | Time to pull up your pants: "Major brands are lifting waists in what they say is a backlash against low-cut jeans that show too much.

Mavi Jeans' Michelle Lopez said one of their biggest sellers was the Jamie jean that was high at the back.

'It covers the bum and the love handles,' she said.

'They keep your butt in.'

She said while fashion had revelled in belly and bum skimming jeans in recent years there had been a backlash against the trend which had gone too far."

Dream island a jail nightmare | National Breaking News | Breaking News 24/7 - NEWS.com.au (28-05-2005)
"For the next two decades, barring a successful appeal or a prisoner exchange deal with her homeland, the 27-year-old Gold Coast woman will be confined to a disease-infested prison housing some of the world's most notorious Islamic extremists.

And, say experts, unless Corby resigns herself to her fate – something she has so far refused to do – her sentence for smuggling 4.1 kilograms of marijuana onto the island will be much worse.

After her sentencing yesterday, the student beautician was dragged from her tearful family and taken to Kerobokan jail, a sprawling maximum security penitentiary on the fringes of the Balinese capital Denpasar."

Wrongful Conviction

Corby 'fears being forgotten'
"SCHAPELLE Corby feared she will be forgotten in the Indonesian jail in which she had been sentenced to serve 20 years, her sister said today.
Corby was sentenced in a Denpasar court on Friday after being convicted of smuggling 4.1kg of marijuana into the Indonesian resort island of Bali last year.
Corby's sister, Mercedes, says the 27-year-old former beauty therapy student is scared of being abandoned when the dust finally settles after Friday's verdict."

Media circus blamed for Corby sentence
Schapelle Corby could have got a better result had there been less media hype, says a QC who may help with her appeal.
Barrister Tom Percy, QC, said he had no doubt the 27-year-old was innocent, and blamed the media circus for putting pressure on the case.

"The only thing Schapelle is guilty of is wanting to go on a holiday and her naivety of not putting a lock on her bag.

She accidentally stumbled into a criminal network when the drugs were slipped into her bag once it cleared security checks, to be collected by a worker at Sydney airport.

Schapelle was used a [drug] mule to in a racket of drug pushers and curupt bagage handlers. costing her freedom, possibly even her life." [1]

The problem is that an appeal could possibly make things much worse. An appeal will be like the roll of the dice -- is it worth the risks?

Schapelle Corby has been wrongly convicted

Update: May 29, 2005 Pardon may be Corby's best bet

Schapelle has shown her strength of character. She is a brave young woman. Her request to her family is admirable: Corby tells family to stay away
"Schapelle Corby has asked her family not to visit her in prison for at least a week, because she is worried about the impact the media presence is having on them.
Corby's lawyers say the Gold Coast woman is still in shock over the verdict against her."[2]

Some people are urging Corby to seek a pardon in order to reduce her sentence, but the problem is that the Gordian knot would be tightened because to seek a pardon would be to admit guilt.
Corby defence rules out pardon bid
"SCHAPELLE Corby's defence team says she is not seeking a pardon from Indonesia's president, despite suggestions from Foreign Minister Alexander Downer that it could be her best bet of a lesser sentence.
The legal team said to do so would mean admitting to a crime she did not commit.
'The girl is not guilty,' said defence adviser Vasu Rasiah. 'How can she ask for a pardon?'
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said today that a pardon from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono might be the best chance the 27-year-old Gold Coast woman had of having her 20-year prison sentence for drug smuggling reduced.

Shannon McLure, Schapelle's ex-boyfriend, is complicating matters by calling for a boycott of Bali and by stirring up emotions about foreign aid and trade to Indonesia.

Corby fears fuel baggage protection | Business Breaking News | Breaking News 24/7 - NEWS.com.au (28-05-2005): "THOUSANDS of travellers passing through Australian airports weekly are having their luggage plastic wrapped in the wake of the Schapelle Corby furore.
Trade at luggage-protection business Protectabag, set up in Brisbane and Melbourne international airports by Dennis and Julie Gyde, has more than doubled in recent months because of travellers' fears of being used as unwitting drug couriers."

Corby case strains Indonesia-Australia ties, FM Downer warns against backlash

Channelnewsasia.com:

"Analysts said the strong public reaction to the case would put strains on the relationship between Canberra and Jakarta, which has recently been boosted by Australia's 1 billion dollars (760 million US) in aid and a visit by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

'It's created an awkward situation for the Australian government, because it has to try to manage the public reaction in Australia while at the same time maintaining its encouragement for an independent judiciary in Indonesia,' University of Sydney Southeast Asia expert Edward Aspinall told AFP.

Malcolm Cook, an Asia analyst at Sydney think tank the Lowy Institute for International Policy said most Australians remained sceptical about Indonesia, and the Corby case could erode the goodwill generated in the wake of the December 26 tsunami disaster.

'There's a bedrock of opinion in Australia that has a very ambivalent attitude towards Indonesia and this will reinforce those stereotypes,' he told AFP. "

Australian press say Indonesian justice merciless in Corby case

Channelnewsasia.com: Australian press say Indonesian justice merciless in Corby case : "SYDNEY : Australian newspapers defended the integrity of the Indonesian justice system but said it had failed to show mercy to Schapelle Corby, the young Australian sentenced to 20 years for smuggling cannabis into the resort island of Bali.

'Nation's fury' Sydney's Daily Telegraph declared on its front page, comparing Corby's sentence with that given to Muslim cleric Abu Bakir Bashir for his role in planning the 2002 Bali bombing.

'This terrorist planned the murder of 88 Australians and got two years. Yesterday Schapelle Corby got 20,' the tabloid said. "

7 of Coins/Pentacles disruption of Karma from tragic case

After this tragic sentence of Schapelle Corby, pain will disrupt the flow of goodwill between the two countries. A consequence of this is that a profitable market exchange will diminish. Indonesia will experience a market loss of some sort.

DJ MARKET TALK:Corby Verdict May Crimp Aussie-Indonesia Ties
"0354 GMT [Dow Jones] Expect rise - at least in short term - in anti-Indonesia sentiment in Australia, which may complicate things for PM Howard, after Bali court finds Australian woman Schapelle Corby guilty of smuggling marijuana, sentences her to 20 years jail; Corby case has drawn massive interest in home country with polls showing most believed she was innocent, wanted government to intervene (though Jakarta can't tell its courts what to do). Indonesia/Australia ties have been often been frayed though things have warmed up since Yudhoyono elected; may now be fall in Australian tourists going to Bali in particular. Howard though had urged Australians to accept court's verdict, whatever it was.(RXM)"

'The dollar took a breather here after sharp gains yesterday,' said Junya Tanase, currency strategist at JP Morgan Chase, noting the dollar's recent rally was led mainly by speculators covering their short dollar positions.

Dealers said weighing on the euro against the dollar include widespread speculation that the French will vote against the EU constitution in a national referendum Sunday and the Dutch will vote down the referendum next Wednesday."

Makeover for Gretna

Scotland on Sunday - Opinion - Leaders - Makeover for Gretna:

"GRETNA is in line for a facelift. The wedding capital of Scotland (some would claim, of the world) is to be revamped in a style that will enable it to compete with its closest rival, Las Vegas."

"As for the Old Blacksmith’s Shop - the whole concept is so ‘Then’, when what we need is a wedding venue that shrieks ‘Now!’ What bride wants to be married on an anvil? (Okay, 16 a day at present, but we can do better than that.) Cobblers to horse-cobblers - since much of the cash is coming from an £8m pot for local regeneration after the closure of Chapelcross nuclear power station, why not shift the venue there?"

There was something intriguing about the old fashioned charm of Gretna Green...

Astrology and sonnets (Was:Re:Weekly Sonnet, No. 140)

Google Groups : humanities.lit.authors.shakespeare

"Shakespeare doesn't speak of astronomy as we know it in sonnet 14. He is referring to astrology, as the lines following 'astronomy' plainly show:

Shakespeare Sonnet 14

Not from the stars do I my judgement pluck,
And yet methinks I have astronomy,
But not to tell of good, or evil luck,
Of plagues, of dearths, or seasons' quality,
Nor can I fortune to brief minutes tell;
Pointing to each his thunder, rain and wind,
Or say with princes if it shall go well
By oft predict that I in heaven find.
But from thine eyes my knowledge I derive,
And constant stars in them I read such art
As truth and beauty shall together thrive
If from thy self, to store thou wouldst convert:
Or else of thee this I prognosticate,
Thy end is truth's and beauty's doom and date. "
