Michael's Tarot Notebook

Michael's Tarot Notebook
Although the primary focus of the Notebook is an exegesis of the Tarot trumps’ intended meaning, there are some historical ideas presented. One in particular is noteworthy, and is the subject of its own page. The original form of Tarot is not known with certainly from the existing documentary evidence. Milan and Ferrara are the most commonly suggested places of origin. No “standard pattern” decks from Milan have survived. The French brought Tarot from Milan in the late fifteenth century, but the oldest extant standard pattern decks from France, known as Tarot de Marseille or TdM, are from the late seventeenth century. Based primarily on iconographic evidence and inference, it appears that two of the earliest surviving French decks (those by Chosson and Noblet) accurately reflect the iconography of fifteenth-century Milanese decks, and moreover that the original design of Tarot is reflected in one of them, and an intentional variation in the other.

I became interested in Tarot cards after reading The Castle of Crossed Destinies by Italo Calvino (available from amazon.com and amazon.co.uk). In this book the cards are arranged in grids and each sequence of cards tells a different fairy tale. The images here are of a high enough resolution for printing should you wish to do the same. "These techniques promote occultism in a variety of forms, remove trust in God, and replace it with faith in pagan magic. In other words, they secure the goals of the demons.

These systems carry all the subtle traps and consequences of divinatory practices in general. As occult authority W. B. Crow warns in A History of Magic, Witchcraft and Occultism, any type of divination 'is nearly always dangerous.' 1 These practices: 1) develop a person psychically and 2) may lead to direct spirit contact."

Ankerberg Theological Research Institute - The John Ankerberg Show

Ankerberg Theological Research Institute - The John Ankerberg Show:

"The practice of using tarot cards and the cabala are rooted in numerology, and astrology also bears a relationship. As with other forms of divination, there are two principal aspects: 1) character assessment and 2) divining or predicting the future.

Numerologists claim they cannot only help people to understand themselves better, but that they must also help them to make important decisions in all areas of life. Numerologists claim to offer the following information or advice: choosing the correct marriage partner, vocation, city, or house in which to live; individual 'compatibility' with the products one uses; understanding one’s mate and friends better; when to buy property or invest in a business; the best days to take a trip, apply for a new job, start a new venture, have surgery, and so on.1 Practitioners also allege that numerology can advise clients about what to do or not to do in any given year. "The occult nature of the tarot is the principal reason why the church has consistently opposed its use, as even tarot promoters admit:

They represent the outcome of a much more profound doctrine—a secret and forbidden doctrine—a doctrine that was condemned from almost every pulpit in Christian Europe of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries… as some sort of evil influence. Priests dubbed the set of Tarot cards 'The Devil’s Picture Book' and forbade their use for any purpose in most towns and villages."

"Tarot cards have engrossed the elite in Hollywood, politicians, psychologists, and note-worthy members of the fine arts communities. Surrealist Salvador Dali’s wife, Gala, was interested in the occult and piqued her husband’s interest so that he painted a new set of cards for her, illustrated in the 1985 version of Salvador Dali’s Tarot by Rachael Pollack. Dali is only one of hundreds of famous individuals throughout history who have been interested in the tarot and similar forms of card divination. In the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, special sets of tarot cards were hand-painted for the royal families of France (the Gringonneur Tarot) and Italy (the Vicont-Sforza Tarot)."

"When occultist Alfred Douglas describes some of the cards’ esoteric principles in The Tarot: The Origins, Meaning and Uses of the Cards, we see how they may be used in psychology, and also the risks of tarot meditation. The potential for the tarot deck to incorporate spiritistic contacts can also be seen via the tarot characters 'coming alive,' for example, through the personification of the 'inner self' as a guardian angel or in the ritual of 'dismissing' occult powers "

Andy's Playing Cards - The Tarot And Other Early Cards - page I

"The 78-card deck generally known as "tarot" has been one of the first kinds of playing cards to be manufactured in Western countries, and the very first one made in Italy.
This statement is based on a certain number of written sources dating back to the late Middle Ages: such documents provide the description of games played by those days, first mentioning cards as a pastime played in princely courts of Northern Italy by the first half of the 15th century.
It appears obvious that by the 1400s playing cards had already entered the European continent, but how this happened, and when, is still a matter of debate.

THE COMPOSITION OF TAROT DECKS

Tarot decks are made of two distinct groups of cards: 22 individual subjects named trumps, arranged in a specific sequence, and 56 cards divided into four classic suits or families, Coins, Cups, Swords and Batons, usually called suit cards."

The Hermitage: Tarot History

The Hermitage:?Tarot History:

"Some time in the first half of the fifteenth century, somewhere in northern Italy, someone created the first set of tarot cards. Like the playing cards of the time, the tarot deck included number cards (1 through 10) in four suits, and court cards page, knight, and king. But the tarot deck had more: a queen was added to each of the courts, and 22 special cards, not belonging to any suit, were added. These special cards bore symbolic pictures, with such subjects as the Emperor, the Pope, The Wheel of Fortune, Death, the Devil, and the Moon.

The tarot cards were used to play a new type of card game, similar to bridge, but with 21 of the special cards serving as permanent trumps, which could be played regardless of what suit was led, and outranked all the ordinary cards. This Game of Triumphs, as it was called, became extraordinarily popular, particularly among the upper classes, and spread through northern Italy and eastern France. As the game spread to new locales, changes were often made in the pictures, and also in the ranking of the trumps, which usually bore no numbers. In time, tarot spread south to Sicily and north to Austria, Germany, and the low countries."

MALMORDO: "'Three nights now you have worn it,' the gypsy told the girl, 'and each night brings more danger. I warn you, it is not safe to come here!'

'But I have come here safely -'

'And you may not find it safe to stay.' Thalla pointed a shapely finger to one of the tarot cards. 'This is the sign that tells your future.'

Janice stared at the card, much puzzled.

'But that card is blank!' she exclaimed. 'How did it come to be among the others?'

Thalla shrugged as though she didn't know.

'But since it is blank,' persisted Janice, 'how can you read it? What does it tell?'

'Your future.' Thalla intoned the words solemnly. 'No future. Blank, like the card!'

Thalla could say no more, for Gregor was drowning all sounds with the maddened shriek of his fiddle. Then, with a burst that seemed to strain the violin's strings, the wild music ended.

The sudden silence seemed sharp. It made ears keen, too, for Harry could hear a peculiar sound from somewhere along the wooden fence. The more he listened, the more that sound reminded him of something gnawing at the wood. Immediately the thought of rats sprang to Harry's mind, though it seemed unlikely that rats would try to chew their way into as populated a spot as this outdoor garden."

" His sister [Isis] hath protected him, and hath repulsed the
fiends, and turned aside calamities (of evil). She uttered the spell
with the magical power of her mouth. Her tongue was perfect, and it
never halted at a word. Beneficent in command and word was Isis, the
woman of magical spells, the advocate of her brother. She sought him
untiringly, she wandered round and round about this earth in sorrow,
and she alighted not without finding him. She made light with her
feathers, she created air with her wings, and she uttered the death
wail for her brother. She raised up the inactive members of whose
heart was still, she drew from him his essence, she made an heir,
she reared the child in loneliness, and the place where he was not
known, and he grew in strength and stature, and his hand was mighty in
the House of Keb. The Company of the Gods rejoiced, rejoiced, at the

triumphant, the son of Isis, the heir of Osiris."

The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum

The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum

Eliphas Levi

The Magical Ritual of the Sanctum Regnum:

"The twenty-two Tarot Trumps bear a relation to numbers and to letters; the true attributions are known, so far as is ascertainable, to but a few students, members of the Hermetic schools: the attributions given by Levi in his Dogme and Rituel, by Christian, and by Papus are incorrect, presumably by design. The editor has seen a manuscript page of cypher about 150 years old which has a different attribution, and one which has been found by several occult students, well known to him, to satisfy all the conditions required by occult science.

The eight coloured plates with which this volume is embellished are facsimile copies of Levis own drawings; they add greatly to the charm of the work, and are a credit to the publisher and to the artist who executed them. The design on the cover is the monogram drawn by Levi to represent the 'Completion of the Great Work,' see page 45. The Cross---four, multiplied by the triangle---three, gives twelve the complete number of a cycle: the Hebrew letter Tau represents the Universe.

'The Mysteries of Magic, a Digest of the Writings of Eliphaz Levi, by Mr. A. E. Waite, published by Mr. Redway in 1886, has had so large a circulation among English readers, that the editor anticipates a cordial reception for this little volume.

LONDON, February 1896."

Specialists and Pigs

Stock Basics - How Stocks Trade

"The NYSE is the first type of exchange (as we referred to above), where much of the trading is done face-to-face on a trading floor. This is also referred to as a 'listed' exchange. Orders come in through brokerage firms that are members of the exchange and flow down to floor brokers who go to a specific spot on the floor where the stock trades. At this location, known as the trading post, there is a specific person known as the 'specialist' whose job is to match buyers and sellers. Prices are determined using an auction method: the current price is the highest amount any buyer is willing to pay and the lowest price at which someone is willing to sell [-- or the price influenced by the specialist buying or selling with advance knowledge of a block transaction for his own firm's account]. Once a trade has been made, the details are sent back to the brokerage firm, who then notifies the investor who placed the order. " [1]

Specialists who engage in "interpositioning," "front-running," and "trading ahead of investor orders" are also pigs.

Front running
"Entering into an equity trade, options or futures contracts with advance knowledge of a block transaction that will influence the price of the underlying security to capitalize on the trade. This practice is expressly forbidden by the SEC. Traders are not allowed to act on nonpublic information to trade ahead of customers lacking that knowledge." Quoted from Campbell R. Harvey's Hypertextual Finance Glossary

Trading Ahead
"A New York Stock Exchange rule violation. Basically, in this situation the specialist puts their firm's interest ahead of the investor's interest. Consider an example. Suppose that the specialist simultaneously receives orders from two investors, one to sell 5,000 shares of XYZ and one to buy 5,000 shares of XYZ. Normally, these orders are matched. However, suppose that the specialist substitutes (matches) her own firm's 5,000 shares of XYZ. That is, the firm's own shares are sold instead of the order that came in previously. This disadvantages the buyer because the very next transaction will be the order to sell 5,000 shares of XYZ (which will likely put downward pressure on the price). Notice that the firm has bailed out of XYZ at a higher price than if the order was reversed (the specialist's firm selling afterwards)." Quoted from Campbell R. Harvey's Hypertextual Finance Glossary

"It's perhaps inevitable that this latest phase of the specialist scandal will bring up new questions about the strength of the NYSE's regulatory program. Given this and past problems, critics have wondered if the exchange can be trusted to police itself and its members."

The New York Times > Business > 15 Specialists From Big Board Are Indicted

The New York Times > Business > 15 Specialists From Big Board Are Indicted:
"The 15 specialists indicted, all but two of whom have left their firms, were members of the New York Stock Exchange's five major specialist trading companies. They are accused of making illegal trading profits from interpositioning of $13.4 million and costing investors more than $19 million from trading for their firms' accounts ahead of customers.

In some instances where, prosecutors said, the traders were cheating customers, they referred to the exchange's electronic order system with an obscenity. Mark Schonfeld, director of the S.E.C.'s Northeast Region office, said the specialists' disregard for their obligations was 'profound, and at times profane.'

In one case, at 9:41 a.m. on Oct. 2, 2002, the computer of a specialist in General Electric stock indicated that at a price of $25.85, there were orders to buy 39,500 shares and orders to sell 35,000 shares. The specialist, David A. Finnerty of Fleet Specialist, should have matched the 35,000, prosecutors say. Instead he bought 22,700 shares for Fleet's own account at $25.85, then raised the price to $25.95. Just after 9:42, he sold 12,800 shares from the same account, making $1,280 in about 14 seconds."

Economist.com | The New York Stock Exchange: Charges against its middlemen roil the Big Board

"LOTS of money can be made in the tiny gaps between the buying and selling prices of shares. But the “specialists” on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), who match buy and sell orders, walk a fine line between their duty to their customers and that to their employers. Too fine, it seems. This week federal prosecutors in America charged 15 specialists with making $19m for their firms from improper trading. At the same time the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) settled civil charges against the NYSE for poor oversight of its floor, where most trades are still done.

~snip some very interesting information--click the link to read the article~

This week's charges may hasten the exchange's switch away from the floor. “Electronic trading systems are much less scandal-prone,” says Benn Steil of the Council on Foreign Relations. The NYSE already plans to become more electronic—and, says Mr Steil, if John Thain, the chief executive, and Marshall Carter, just appointed as chairman, want to get serious about an initial public offering, the trading floor might just have to go altogether. Specialists would rue that day, but would have only themselves to blame."

NYSE traders indicted on charges of cheating investors - UPDATE 5

Industry News

"Among the stocks in which the alleged fraudulent trading occurred were General Electric, Goldman Sachs, Johnson & Johnson, J.P. Morgan Chase, Nokia, Texas Instruments and Verizon Communication. The Wall Street Journal reported that defense lawyers representing the specialists have argued to investigators that the trading conduct in question was widespread and not illegal.

Prosecutors charged individual specialists at units of Bank of America Corp, Bear Stearns, Goldman Sachs, LaBranche and Van der Moolen. Fourteen of the 15 specialists facing criminal charges surrendered this morning. One is in Netherlands and considered 'at large,' prosecutors said. Named in criminal complaints were former Fleet Specialists' David Finnerty, Donald R. Foley, Scott G. Hunt and Thomas J. Murphy Jr.; and former LaBranche specialist Fred DeBoer. Van der Moolen specialists named in the complaint were Joseph Bongiorno, Michael Hayward, Gerard Hayes, Patrick McCagh, Robert Scavone, Michael Stern and Richard Volpe. Frank A. Delaney and Kevin M. Fee of Bear Wagner Specialists were also named. Of those, five specialists also served as quasi-policemen for the NYSE. Hayward, Scavone, Stern and Volpe were 'floor officials' charged with monitoring the trading activities of floor brokers, who trade for investors, as well as watching other specialists. Bongiorno served in a higher office, floor governor. Prosecutors say some of the defendants not only traded ahead of customers but pushed the price of a security higher or lower to benefit his firm's account."

NYSE specialists face criminal indictment

NYSE specialists face criminal indictment:

"Last year, NYSE specialist firms paid a total of $247 million to settle the same allegations brought by the SEC.

The firms' profits come from fees on each transaction as well as their own stock trading. Critics of the specialist system claim this is an inherent conflict of interest, while the NYSE has noted that the specialist firms gained $155 million in illegal profits over five years, a time when the exchange handled $50 trillion in trades."

Exchange Handbook: SEC Institues Enforcement Action Against 20 Former New York Stock Exchange Specialists Alleging Pervasive Course Of Fraudulent Trading - Respondents Include Two Former Ceos Of Spear Leeds & Kellogg Specialists And Four Former Members Of Van Der Moolen Specialist' Management Committee

"The Division of Enforcement alleges that the named specialists abandoned one of their most basic obligations, the obligation to refrain from trading from a specialist' proprietary account when customer buy and sell orders could have simply been paired off with one another. Instead of doing so, these specialists treated customer orders that should have been paired off as personal trading opportunities, often to the detriment of customer orders. The fraudulent conduct took at least two forms: "interpositioning" and "trading ahead." In the first form of trading, the specialists "interpositioned" their firms' proprietary accounts between two customer orders by trading into both customer orders in succession – for example, buying into a customer sell order first, and then selling, at a higher price, into the opposite market buy order. In this fashion, the specialists were able to make guaranteed, riskless profits for their firms' proprietary accounts at the expense of customer orders. In the second form of trading, the specialist filled one agency order through a proprietary trade for the specialist firm' proprietary account – and thereby improperly "stepped in front" of, or "traded ahead" of, the other agency order – simply to allow the specialist firm to take advantage of market conditions promptly. By "trading ahead," the specialist locked in a better price for the proprietary trade, and then later filled the agency order at an inferior price, thus disadvantaging the agency order. The 20 specialists charged in this action committed thousands of these illicit trades, causing customer losses in the millions of dollars between 1999 and 2003.

The order also charges that several of the specialists engaged in particularly egregious conduct. For example, in several instances of 'interpositioning,' the specialists not only disadvantaged both a buy and a sell order, but also moved the price up or down from the last sale price to further advantage the specialist firm' proprietary account. In other instances, several of the specialists punctuated their improper trading with statements such as 'f—k the DOTs' and 'screw the DOTs' as they were in fact disadvantaging agency orders."

mcall.com: 15 NYSE specialist traders hit with federal fraud charges

"Federal authorities said that between 1999 and mid-2003, specialists at five firms put their companies' orders ahead of customers' orders, causing those customers to get inferior prices — a scheme the NYSE's internal regulators failed to catch.

'Over time, these small thefts accumulate into large profits that translate into higher compensation and bonuses for specialists who execute the trades,' U.S. Attorney David Kelley said at a Manhattan news conference.

Specialists run the open-outcry auctions on the floor of the NYSE, matching buy and sell orders for customers of the stocks they oversee. They also use their firms' money to buy shares when nobody else wants to buy and to sell shares from their own inventory when nobody else wants to sell.

The defendants were expected to 'refrain from trading for their firm's proprietary account except when necessary to maintain a fair and orderly market,'' said Mark Schonfeld, director of the SEC's New York office. ''The specialists named in today's action showed a disregard for their legal duty that was both profound and, at times, profane.'

Four pleaded not guilty to multiple securities fraud charges in federal court in Manhattan and were released on bail, and 10 more were awaiting arraignment. The 15th was believed to be in Europe.

If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $5 million."

The ones pleading not guilty are: David Finnerty, Donald R. Foley II, Frank A. Delaney IV and Thomas J. Murphy Jr.
