Eagles news: Eagles to soar through North America in 2005
"Underscoring the facetious nature of their ongoing tour's title--Farewell I--the Eagles (news | tickets | CDs) return to the U.S. tour circuit early next year.
The classic-rock icons are due to launch the trek in South Carolina on March 5, and dates--which so far focus on the eastern U.S. and Canada--are set through mid April.
Tickets for a number of shows are scheduled to hit the box office in the coming days. Details are shown in the itinerary below.
Word of the 2005 tour and VIP ticket packages coincides with the launch of the band's new website, Eaglesband.com, and also heralds the demise of the band's official online fanclub, a short-lived endeavor launched last year with Yahoo.com.
The fanclub will be 'permanently discontinued' on Dec. 10, according to a message posted at the site, which also contains refund information.
The Eagles' most recent release is last year's 'Eagles -- The Very Best Of.' The 33-track, two-disc set features hits such as 'Hotel California,' 'The Best of My Love,' 'Heartache Tonight,' and 'Life in the Fast Lane.' Also included is a new single titled 'Hole in the World,' as well as 'Please Come Home for Christmas,' which was previously available only as a commercial single.
No word on when an expected new studio album--the group's first since 1979's 'The Long Run'--might surface."

Wired News: Grim Signs Mark Global Warming
"Story location: http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,65654,00.html
02:00 AM Nov. 10, 2004 PT
Global warming has disrupted the lives of dozens of types of animals, birds and insects in the United States and will soon make the Arctic nearly unrecognizable, according to two reports released this week.
The reports document sweeping 'you-can-see-them-with-your-own-eyes' ecological changes underway and offer dire predictions of massive species extinctions, an elevation of sea level by 3 feet and widespread disruptions to Earth's life-support systems.
These dramatic changes should be a wake-up call to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and bolster efforts to conserve American wildlife and natural habitat, said Eileen Claussen, president of the Pew Center on Global Climate Change, an independent, nonprofit and nonpartisan organization that commissioned the Observed Impacts of Global Climate Change in the U.S. report.
'Continued climate change could drastically alter the U.S. natural landscape,' said Claussen."

Among those convicted was Merrill's former head of investment banking, Daniel Bayly."
TheBostonChannel.com - Buyer Beware - Beware Of New Phone Identity Scam
"In the latest scam, Wornick said, a friendly caller explains he's not trying to sell you anything and he is from a federal agency trying to protect your identity -- and guess how. He needs to check all your personal information against what's on his list. The caller asks you for everything, such as your name, address, and Social Security number.
Federal agencies aren't calling people checking on their personal information, Wornick said. They haven't begun a new national effort and there's no one in government aggressively trying to protect your identity.
If you get this call, you are talking to a legitimate scam artist who will do who-knows-what with your personal information. Don't even talk to this caller -- just hang up."

"
The Cosmetic Site | Articles | Computerized Measurement and Correction of Color Cosmetics
"Colors can be differentiated and classified according to their hue (color), lightness (brightness) and chroma (saturation). Black and white have no chroma or hue. A color can be specified completely in terms of its hue, lightness and chroma.
Hue: The term “hue” is used for the classification of an object’s basic color, such as red, yellow, green, blue or purple. The hue of orange results from the mixing of red and yellow, two completely different hues. A color’s specific hue is a single point on the continuum of the color spectrum that runs from red to purple.
Lightness: Lightness is how we differentiate between light and dark colors. The more light that is reflected by an object, the lighter it appears. The more light that is absorbed by an object, the darker it appears. Maximum reflection of all wavelengths of visible light is white. Maximum absorbance of all wavelengths of visible light is black.
Lightness can be measured independent of hue so we can compare the brightness of a blue to that of a red or any other two hues. Visually, it is easy to differentiate the brightness of the same hue, but comparing the brightness of different hues becomes more difficult.
Chroma: Chroma is used to distinguish vivid colors from dull colors. Chroma is the attribute of visual perception that deals with the saturation of a particular hue, or color. A red tomato is high in chroma while a pale pink flower is low in chroma. Chroma is completely independent of both hue and lightness.
Numerical Methods to Measure Color
We can now measure color numerically by creating scales for hue, lightness and chroma."

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review thoroughly reviews and assesses the safety of ingredients used in cosmetics in an open, unbiased, and expert manner, and publishes the results in the open, peer-reviewed scientific literature."
FDA Consumer Reprint--Cosmetic Ingredients: Understanding the Puffery
"Federal regulations require ingredients to be listed on product labels in descending order by quantity, but often the list is not user-friendly. Because cosmetic ingredients are often complex chemical substances, the list may be incomprehensible to the product's average user. (See 'Cosmetic Safety: More Complex Than at First Blush' in the November 1991 FDA Consumer.) However, if the same name is used by all manufacturers, consumers can compare different products and make reasonable value judgments.
Although cosmetic claims, even those considered 'puffery,' are allowed without scientific substantiation, if a cosmetic makes a medical claim, such as removing dandruff, the product is regulated as an over-the-counter drug for which scientific studies demonstrating safety and effectiveness must be submitted to FDA."

United Press International - Kerry in hometown for the long wait:
"The results remained close throughout the afternoon. Results released by polling firm Zogby International had the two candidates tied with 252 electoral votes each, excluding Virginia and Pennsylvania. The states, which account for 13 and 21 electoral votes respectively, were too close to call, Zogby reported.
A candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.
Democratic National Committee spokesman Jano Cabrera sounded a cautious note about returns. 'Like everybody, we're just waiting for (returns) to come in,' he said from headquarters at a nearby hotel, adding that he had not heard results indicating Kerry was leading in several surprise states.
The night's celebrations had been complicated by the historic Red Sox victory in the World Series, which had thrown Boston into chaos between an unsure parade schedule and overall celebrations.
Once the schedule was nailed down, however, the celebration was to include singers Sheryl Crow, James Taylor, Carole King, Jon Bon Jovi and the Black Eyed Peas. Democratic National Committee Chairman Terry McAuliffe was to be on hand, as was Boston Mayor Tom Menino and former Sen. Max Cleland of Georgia, who has been a major force in rallying veterans for Kerry.
Kerry said he was going to spend the evening surrounded by his immediate family, while running mate Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina was scheduled to arrive in time for the party..."
Urbana-Champaign Independent Media Center: feature/21495: "In what may be a reversal of the 2000 Presidential elections, Zogby's prediction is now that Kerry will take the electoral college with 311 votes (compared with Bush's 213; however, Bush is predicted to take 49.4% of the popular vote (compared with Kerry's 49.1%)"
Latest News and Financial Information | Reuters.com
"The Iowa Electronic Markets, which has been trading election contracts since 1988, also showed a switch with the winner-takes-all contract showing a 52.3 percent probability of Kerry victory compared with 45.6 percent for Bush.
On Wall Street, major stock markets gave up most of their earlier gains late in the day after some Internet Weblogs showed unconfirmed exit polls pointing to a Kerry win.
As of midnight Monday, Bush had a statistically insignificant 51 percent probability of winning the popular vote in the election, according to the Iowa contracts, slightly ahead of Kerry's 49 percent.
Bush had once led with probability of victory as high as 74 percent in the Iowa winner-takes-all contracts in late September before the first of the election debates.
The contracts cost one cent for each percentage-point of probability, so an implied 50 percent probability would cost 50 cents. The winner-take-all contracts pay $1 to those who correctly predicted the victor and nothing to the loser. The Iowa exchange traded 44,000 contracts on Monday.
'What you're seeing is people have very strong opinions but they're very evenly split,' said Tom Rietz, an associate professor of finance at the University of Iowa, which runs the exchange as a way of studying markets. 'We've never seen anything like this before.'"
Guardian Unlimited | US elections 2004 | Record turnout expected in US vote
"Long queues formed at polling stations across the US today as voters turned out in record numbers to deliver their verdict on the bitterly contested race for the White House.
Election experts predicted that as many as 121 million people would cast their ballots, a figure which would easily surpass the current record of 106 million recorded four years ago.
With the race between George Bush, the Republican president, and John Kerry, his Democratic challenger, on a knife edge, the result could well end up going in favour of the party that does the better job of getting its supporters out to vote."
Yahoo! News - Wall Street roiled by early poll reports showing Kerry strong
"NEW YORK (AFP) - US stocks closed mixed in cautious election day trade as an early rally faded amid Internet reports citing exit polls showing John Kerry running strong against President George W. Bush.
A rally in the Dow Jones Industrial Average faded late in the session, and the blue-chip index fell 18.66 points (0.19 percent) to close at 10,035.73. The index had been up more than 70 points in early trade.
The tech-heavy Nasdaq composite gave up most of its strong rally, but ended with a gain of 4.92 points (0.25 percent) at 1,984.79.
The Standard and Poor's 500 broad-market index was virtually flat, closing up a fractional 0.07 point at 1,130.58.
The market turned lower late in the session after a strong start, with no apparent catalyst, although analysts said Internet reports on the polling may have influenced the market."
The Election and the Dollar
"...If the downward drift of the dollar turns into a precipitous decline, Alan Greenspan & Co. would have to raise interest rates so that foreigners would be willing to buy and hold Treasury bonds. Higher interest rates will cut into business investment and put further pressure on debt-burdened consumers, already hit hard by rising gas and heating oil prices. Result: an economic slow-down.
All of this means that whoever wins Tuesday's election might wish he hadn't. Unless, of course, he is able to tackle the government deficit by cutting back spending, pressure the Chinese into floating their currency and the Japanese into allowing the yen to appreciate against the dollar, and persuade E.U. policymakers to stimulate the region's economy so that it exports less to and imports more from America.
Fat chance. Congress has just passed a pork-laden spending bill that represents the triumph of business obbyists over fiscal sanity; domestic pressures are forcing the Chinese to create millions of jobs by stimulating exports; and E.U. policymakers are unwilling to adopt growth-enhancing reforms. So the next president may preside over a dollar debacle..."
1010wins.com: "MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) -- John Kerry supporters got a welcome omen for their candidate on Sunday: The Green Bay Packers defeated the Washington Redskins.
Quad-City Times Newspaper Online - the Quad-Cities Home Page
"NEW YORK (AP) — Does Wall Street like Bush or Kerry? At this point, investors would be happy with having a clear winner by the opening bell on Wednesday, no matter who it might be.
.
The stock market hates uncertainty, and a second straight election decided by the courts could drive stocks lower for weeks — possibly until someone is inaugurated on Jan. 20. With the contest between President Bush and U.S. Sen.. John Kerry just as tight as the 2000 race, and thousands of lawyers from both parties primed to pounce on even the smallest improprieties, only a solid Tuesday night showing by one of the candidates would likely forestall a downturn in the markets on Wednesday.
.
Regardless of the outcome, the election will likely overshadow a number of important economic reports and earnings releases in the week ahead, including the jobs creation report for October and earnings from media giants Time Warner Inc. and News Corp."
The Hindu : Front Page : Kerry, Bush tied in latest opinion polls: "WASHINGTON, OCT. 31. The United State President, George W. Bush, and his Democratic rival, John Kerry, are tied with two days remaining in a tense race for the White House. According to a Reuters/Zogby poll released today, Mr. Kerry and Mr. Bush were deadlocked at 48 per cent. "
