One of the world's most precious books, the Gutenberg bible was printed between 1452 and 1454. It sparked a literary boom in Europe.

Bruno Fabbiani, a lecturer at Turin Polytechnic, said Gutenberg used stamps rather than the individual, moveable letters he is said to have invented that accelerated printing and book production."

"To record their song, they approached producer Gary Paxton, who sang The Hollywood Argyles' hit, 'Alley Oop'. Pickett and Paxton, along with Leon Russell, Johnny McCrae and Rickie Page recorded the tune, and when the session was done, it was Paxton who came up with the idea of putting 'Bobby 'Boris' Pickett and the Cryptkickers', on the record's label. Pickett also added all his own sound sound effects: the creaky door opening is a nail being pulled from a piece of wood, the boiling cauldron is Pickett blowing bubbles into a cup of water with a straw and the chains are him moving chains up and down. The song was recorded in just one take.

Gary Paxton took the tape to four major labels, who all turned it down. Not discouraged, he had a thousand copies pressed himself and started delivering them to radio stations across California. Soon, the Monster Mash was getting airplay and London Records, who had rejected the song earlier, called Paxton to sign a deal.

Eight weeks later, on October 20, 1962, the record hit number one, just in time for Halloween.

Over the years, the song has been re-released three times and re-entered the Hot 100 on August 29, 1970, peaking at number 91 and again in May of 1972, when it reached number 10."

"The cellists with the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra looked literally like the living dead.

In Madison, where dressing up for Halloween starts early, that's no surprise. The cellists were doing their best white face makeup and all to look like the living dead for WCO's fifth annual Halloween Concert, presented Friday night in Madison Area Technical College's Mitby Theater. WCO will give a repeat performance today at 2 p.m.

For perhaps the first time ever, a program of Beethoven, Mozart and Bizet involved adults dressed as rabbits, crying children, a good long bathroom break and orange goody bags.

The ushers dressed as Dr. Seuss, a cowboy and a Crayola crayon.

Kids loved it. It was the kind of concert where the packed audience clapped and cheered every time something went wrong."

"For the last 13 years, McCarthy's Chicopee home has been transformed into a ghoulish wonderland weeks before the trick-or-treaters arrive.

Hundreds of yards of synthetic spider webs loop from trees to bushes, framing a menagerie of witches, bats, goblins, skeletons and black cats.

At night, a fog machine sets the mood and a projector illuminates a 6-foot wide pumpkin on the front of McCarthy's house. A floodlight washes over a wooden witch silhouette throwing another spooky shadow on the side of the home.

Jutting through the gauzy web are gravestones that her husband, Terrence B. LaRace, etched out of roofing slate. Their epitaphs that are just as likely to cause giggles as gasps:

'Frank N. Stein. A self-made man. May he rest in pieces.'

'Here lies Jack the Cat. Crossed the road. Now he's flat.'

McCarthy has been slowly amassing these gruesome lawn ornaments for years.

Some - like the life-sized witch-on-a-broom that dangles from the maple tree - are pricey items, costing as much as $50 or $60. Others, like the skeleton that she cut from a milk jug, cost just pennies but make her smile all the same.

McCarthy laughs at her gruesome landscaping."

Should the historic Slains Castle, thought to to have been a source of inspiration for Bram Stoker’s horror classic, Dracula, be converted into holiday apartments?

That's the question being posed to members of Aberdeenshire Council’s Banff and Buchan area committee. Will development ruin the local flavor or will historic preservation enhance the area? Some locals don't think so.

"Perched on the dramatic cliffs near the infamous Bullers of Buchan, Slains Castle was home to the Earls of Erroll for more than four centuries. A castle was first built on the site in 1598 by the ninth Earl of Erroll. Death duties forced the 20th earl to sell Slains in 1916, after which the castle was allowed to fall into disrepair. It has lain derelict since the 1920s.

The ruined keep is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the North-east. But an Inverurie-based development company, the Slains Partnership, sparked a storm of protest earlier this year when it lodged plans to restore the ruins and turn them into 35 holiday apartments.

The Slains Partnership claims the tourism development will restore the "iconic" cliff-top castle and bring cultural and tourism-related benefits, both regionally and nationally, as well as securing the future of Slains Castle.

Angry locals, however, claim the development will 'drive a stake' through its heart."

Carving jack-o'-lanterns is a Halloween custom brought to this country by Irish immigrants arriving to escape 'the Hunger,' or the Great Potato Famine of the 1840s.

'A legend grew up about a man named Jack, who was so stingy he was not allowed into heaven when he died,' a U.S. State Department publication says. 'He couldn't enter hell, either, because he had played jokes on the devil. As a result, Jack had to walk the Earth with his lantern until Judgment Day.'

The Irish began the 'Jack of the Lanterns' or jack-o' lantern tradition by slicing frightening facial features into turnips, beets or potatoes.

'But when the Irish brought their customs to the United States, they carved faces on pumpkins because in the autumn they were more plentiful than turnips,' the State Department says.

The practice eventually spread worldwide, becoming in the process an enduring symbol of Halloween and the autumn harvest. Pumpkins are native to the Americas. Historians believe they were featured on the first Thanksgiving Day menu -- probably cut into strips and roasted by the Indians.

Increasingly, a strong back can be more important than a green thumb for growing pumpkins. It isn't uncommon for some of the larger hybrids to produce fruit weighing more than 1,200 pounds, says Everett Davis, who directs the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Center at Lumberton.

'Certain varieties grow much larger than the typical, but they're not all that edible,' Davis says. 'Folks that grow the giant pumpkins take things very seriously. They give their plants meticulous care. They treasure their seeds, making them family heirlooms.'

The world's record runs well over 1,300 pounds. Fanciers predict that with the right seeds and the proper nurturing, it won't be long before pumpkins are produced that top a ton in size.

Pumpkins are grown most often for their ornamental value although they're also a popular ingredient -- often used interchangeably with squash or sweet potatoes -- in pies, soups, stews and breads, among other things."

"On Halloween night, cumbersome costumes and blinding masks can make walking safely through dark neighborhoods difficult. The following tips can help prevent fall-related injuries:

Apply face paint or cosmetics directly to the face. It is safer than a loose-fitting mask that can obstruct a child's vision.

If a mask is worn, be certain it fits securely. Cut the eyeholes large enough for full vision.

Give trick-or-treaters flashlights.

Make costumes short enough to avoid tripping.

Secure hats so they will not slip over children's eyes.

Dress children in shoes that fit.

Adult shoes are not safe for trick-or-treaters. The larger size makes it easier for them to trip and fall.

Allow children to carry only flexible knives, swords or other props. Anything they carry could injure them if they fall.

Teach children not to cut across yards. Lawn ornaments and clotheslines are hidden hazards in the dark.

Tell your children to stay on the sidewalk at all times.

Burns

Fires and burns are the third leading cause of unintentional injury-related death among children. On Halloween, the National SAFE KIDS Campaign recommends:

Looking for flame resistant labels on costumes, masks, beards and wigs.

Using fire resistant material when making costumes.

Avoid costumes made of flimsy material and outfits with big, baggy sleeves or billowing skirts. These are more likely to come in contact with an exposed flame, such as a candle, than tighter fitting costumes.

Keep candles, pumpkins with candles, matches and lighters out of children's reach.

By following these simple rules and guidelines your trick-or-treaters should enjoy a safe and fun holiday."

"But trick-or-treating doesn't have to be all about the candy, and kids can
still have fun without overloading on too many tooth decay-causing snacks.
The Pennsylvania Dental Association (PDA) has some suggestions for tooth-
friendly and non-food treats to pass out this year. Among these are sugarless
gum, popcorn, crayons, rubber balls, coins, stickers or activity sheets.

activity sheets for the children in your neighborhood.

"'We had two parallel tracks of development going on while we put Bloodlines together,' Troika's Leonard Boyarsky said as he ran his Ventrue vampire through a conversation with the sexy leader of the Kuei-Jin. The Kuei-jin are Asian vampires -- mostly from China -- who labor under a completely different curse than their Western counterparts. 'On the one hand, we had people within the company who were really pushing us to focus on the RPG aspects of the game, the conversations and the storyline. On the other hand, we had some of our younger testers who kept coming up to us and saying that what the game needed was much more combat.' According to Boyarsky, having people push and pull from both sides of the divide actually contributed to making a better combined game than it might have been otherwise.

'We wanted to make sure that however the player chose to work his way through the game, it'd be both possible and fun,' Boyarsky said. To illustrate how, he talked about how two different Troika employees approached Bloodlines. 'We had one guy who just put all of his skill points into social and stealth skills,' he said, 'and never did more combat than what was absolutely required by the game.' According to Boyarsky, it is completely possible to finish the game using nothing more than sneakiness and a silver tongue. He warns, however, that it isn't easy. "

Vampire/Halloween Memories

I remember wanting to be a female vampire since the age of 5.
Most childhood Halloweens were spent in quest of this goal, however far off the mark I was, I would dream that I'd be closer to my ideal vampire image come next year's Halloween.
I'd buy things on sale out of season in preparation for the next Halloween.

When I was a little girl, the choices available were not as extensive as the costume options today. Costumes came in boxes by a company called College Inn (I believe) and the costume would consist of a flimsy garment meant to be worn over clothes and a plastic mask.
There were masks sold separately; although I liked the eye masks which were pointed like the cat's eye glasses, I tired of masks and started to apply white face paint and makeup instead.

Pale Pallor

I enjoy using a white face cream like the ones listed in Rhianna's Ghoulish Gothic Vampire Visage for the heightened dramatic effect.
If I apply something like Color Cup White or a white cream makeup, I can be very active and the makeup will stay on until I remove it later on (vampire makeup removal would be a tutorial in itself!)
When I use a white face cream, my makeup techniques are similar to the Japanese Kabuki style.
Simplify the techniques seen on the Kabuki and Japanese Dance web page and you'll get a feel for my vampire makeup application routine.
Getting your real hair out of your face with a hair band or an inexpensive wig cap is very important.
People may wonder why I like to whiten my face with white face cream, but I love looking like a quasi-cartoon vampire. I feel like a living vampire anime

There have been times when I wanted the more subtle Gothic look and there are suggestions in addition to more details of the above here

Vampire Lips & Features

Red, burgundy, purple, or black lipsticks create a focus on the mouth. A black eye pencil can outline the eyes and the eyebrows. I like to use dark eyeshadows: purple, black & silver/gray work well. Suggestions for these items are throughout this blog.

Vampire Wigs

Affordable wigs were difficult to come by & although I lusted after a long hair wig... for many Halloweens I made due with a cheap wig from Woolworths that hardly covered my blonde hair.
If you have trouble hiding your real hair, a solution is to buy a really cheap wig cap to wear under the wig. It is possible to even make a makeshift wig cap from a worn out pair of black pantyhose.

In the past I've used part of an old worn out blanket for a vampire cape.
Once a neighbor had a yard sale where I was able to obtain diaphanous black chiffon remnants which I would drape around myself as some type of mystical vampire.
Your own imagination is a better source for your vampire vision than anyone's preconceived notions.

Suggestions on how to make a vampire cape

There are some interesting sites with tips & instructions for making vampire capes and costumes in general. Someone has a very helpful & illustrated step-by-step instruction page advocating the use of fleece to make a cape for a child. The ideas from this website could be adapted for an adult:
