History and Epistemology of Semiotics

History and Epistemology of Semiotics

SEMIOTICS AND THE SCIENCE OF MEMORY, Paul Bouissac

SEMIOTICS AND THE SCIENCE OF MEMORY, Paul Bouissac
"Semiotic models are indeed often introduced and delivered through a rhetoric of philosophical persuasion and the way some of these models have spread among fairly large constituencies owes a great deal to the charisma of a few individuals and the institutional pressures they create. Like sects, some semiotic models offer a theory of everything rife with tautological predications and self-fulfilling prophecies.
~snip~

Memory has been a topos of western philosophical discourse at least since Plato. If innate ideas constitute a sort of ontological memory, recoverable through anamnesis, signs are only shadows of shadows and what is learned and remembered through sensorial experience can only be accidental and superficial. The relative significance of these two kinds of memory -- ontological and accidental -- in Aristotle and Augustine is endlessly debated in the Middle Ages."

Semiotics for Beginners: Introduction - Daniel Chandler

"Semiotics represents a range of studies in art, literature, anthropology and the mass media rather than an independent academic discipline. Those involved in semiotics include linguists, philosophers, psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists, literary, aesthetic and media theorists, psychoanalysts and educationalists. Beyond the most basic definition, there is considerable variation amongst leading semioticians as to what semiotics involves. It is not only concerned with (intentional) communication but also with our ascription of significance to anything in the world."

Fortune teller jailed after asking for $5,000 sacrifice to lift curse, police say: South Florida Sun-Sentinel

"NORTH MIAMI BEACH – A fortune teller who needed to sacrifice another $5,000 to lift a curse on an undercover cop posing as a customer was arrested on a fraud count, police said on Thursday.

Detectives said there may be more victims to the alleged scam and are asking them to call the Police Investigations Division at 305-948-2940."

$2,700 is a bit high for spiritual meditation, don't you think? Then that was consistently coupled with the old scam of lifting a curse for $5,000.

Heinz Kerry's family fortune worth estimated $1 billion
"Teresa Heinz Kerry, through a network of investments in blue-chip corporations, venture capital funds and municipal bonds, controls a family fortune worth an estimated $1 billion, an analysis of public records shows.

The $1 billion figure is double the estimates of her wealth that are widely cited in news stories about her husband, Sen. John F. Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee for president.

The couple would rank as the wealthiest to occupy the White House, far surpassing such storied presidential fortunes as the Kennedys'. "

Was da Vinci's lover the face of Mona Lisa?

"AN AMATEUR German historian believes she has found the answer to a mystery that has intrigued art historians for centuries.

Maike Vogt-Luerssen says 17 years of research have lead her to conclude that the Mona Lisa portrayed the love-sick Duchess of Milan, and not the wife of a Florentine merchant, as the Louvre, where the picture hangs, insists.

She believes the notoriously enigmatic smile is the hint of the noblewoman’s passion for the painter..."

Fortuneteller finds win was in the cards

firstamendmentcenter.org: news
"NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A federal judge has struck down a law requiring fortunetellers to post disclaimers on their shops and advertisements, calling the ordinance an unconstitutional restriction on free speech.

U.S. District Judge Robert Echols, ruling in favor of former tarot card reader Beth Daly and the American Civil Liberties Union, rejected the city of Dickson's argument that its law was intended to protect citizens from fraud.

Echols cited earlier rulings that determined 'predictions are only fraudulent if the speaker knows of facts that will prevent a prediction from coming true.'"

Reversal of fortuneteller - Sunday, 06/13/04
"Dickson had an ordinance that banned individuals from plying the trade of ''fortuneteller, clairvoyant, hypnotist, spiritualist, palmist, phrenologist or other mystic endowed with supernatural powers.'' Saying they wanted to protect citizens against fraud, Dickson officials said that Daly, the owner of the Curiosity Corner New Age Shop, could read tarot cards as long as she didn't charge for her services. Daly sued, claiming the ordinance violated her First Amendment rights.

Dickson has since replaced its ordinance with one that requires fortunetellers to post disclaimers at their place of business and in advertising. "

Story of an astronomer who designed allegorical card games for the Duke

Marziano da Tortona: Inventor of the Tarot?

"The amazing thing is that Marziano actually wrote a book to go with this deck of cards. In the book, he describes the structure of the deck, and then goes into great detail about each of the classical deities, what they represent, and how they are depicted on the cards. This was the first ever 'companion book' for a deck of cards, and it is sitting in the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris to this day! Not surprisingly, it does not give divinatory meanings. But interestingly, neither does it gives the rules of a card game. The focus is on the allegorical meaning of the pictures and their proper ranking."

Interesting commentary about Gypsies & more within the context of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre

HISTORY OF GYPSIES
"Aside from these labor-oriented functions, another activity in which the Gypsies have participated is entertaining. They danced, sang, and played musical instruments. However, the form of entertainment for which the Gypsies are perhaps the best known is fortune-telling. Taking advantage of the superstitious belief that they possessed magical powers which enabled them to see into the future (Mayall, Gypsy-Travellers 49), Gypsy women sold fortunes at fairs and made considerable profits. They read palms and tarot cards, and cast charms and spells. In nineteenth-century England, fortune-telling was the equivalent of the modern-day horoscope (Mayall, Gypsy-Travellers 50) and taken as seriously by many. Others who considered fortune-telling foolish and unrealistic dismissed it as an easy way for the Gypsies to make money. However, fortune-telling was an important part of Gypsy tradition."

Kudos to the students in English 434 (The Nineteenth-Century English Novel) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn during Winter Term 1997 and 2001 who created a fascinating commentary about Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre.

New copyright grants artists greater license

New copyright grants artists greater license
Countries in Europe are considering "Creative Commons licenses" as an alternative copyright method. This method allows authors and artists to keep some commercial rights while releasing their works for adaptation.

"The idea behind Creative Commons licenses is to give musicians the freedom to release their work to people who want to disseminate it or to remix the music and try something new, Lessig said. Artists choose how they want to share the work, specifying whether they want credit for reuse, whether they want to be paid for commercial use or whether it is acceptable to change it.

'This is a different way of spreading or building upon musical works,' Lessig said.

Lessig, who says that copyright and patent law is too restrictive, is the author of 'Free Culture: How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity,' which he has made available on the Internet for free. The bound version from Penguin Press costs $24.95. He has argued before the U.S. Supreme Court against extending the length of time that copyrights cover original works, a period that lasts 95 years in the United States, and is an advocate of open-source software, which is distributed freely on the Internet."

U.S. Jobless Rate Misses 'Hidden' Unemployed

Some campaign ads give a rosy employment picture. The crystal ball and Reuters show a somewhat murky outlook.

Although it receives little notice, the adjusted jobless rate has important implications for Federal Reserve policy-makers because it suggests the job market will not tighten as quickly as some in the financial markets believe."

Key Facts in the Life of Ray Charles

Music Article | Reuters.com

Soul 'Genius' Ray Charles Spanned Musical Genres

Entertainment News Article | Reuters.com
"He was among the first artists to combine gospel with rhythm and blues, helping to create soul music. Both forms were steeped in the blues, but there had been very little crossover.

Church people were horrified by the sensuality of R&B. When gospel hero Sam Cooke went secular in 1956, he might as well have joined a satanic cult. It was no coincidence that Charles performed at Cooke's funeral eight years later."

His 'I Got A Woman,' is widely considered to be the key that opened the door for a crossover of the black musical heritage into the white American musical mainstream."

Ray Charles, master of music who combined blues, gospel, country, dies at 73

The Ledger Independent:
"BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Ray Charles, the blind singer and piano player who erased musical boundaries with classic hits such as 'What'd I Say,' 'Hit the Road Jack' and the melancholy ballad 'Georgia on My Mind,' died Thursday. He was 73.

Blind by age 7 and an orphan at 15, Charles spent his life shattering any notion of musical boundaries and defying easy definition. A gifted pianist and saxophonist, he dabbled in country, jazz, big band and blues, and put his stamp on it all with a deep, warm voice roughened by heartbreak from a hardscrabble childhood in the segregated South."

Cliodna

Take the quiz: "What Celtic Diety are you?"

Cliodna
(Irish, Scottish) [KLEE-nah] Goddess of beauty and the otherworld. A Tuatha sea and Otherworld Goddess who often took the form of a sea bird and, as such, symbolized the Celtic afterlife. As the ruler of the waves, she was believed to be embodied in every ninth one which broke on shore. This wave was believed to break higher and stronger than the others. In her native Munster she was a Goddess of beauty and was viewed as a very lusty woman who often took her mortal lovers to the Otherworld. She escaped the Otherworld with her favorite mortal lover, Ciabhan of the Curling Locks, just before the Cailleach was ready to send her back. The Cailleach sent her faeries to lull the girl to sleep on an Irish beach while a giant wave washed her back to the land of the dead. She has since existed in Irish mythology as a minor sea Goddess doomed by the Cailleach never to return to Ireland in human form.

The Seattle Times: Personal Technology: Someone's watching you: Spyware likely hitching ride on your computer

The Seattle Times: Personal Technology: Someone's watching you: Spyware likely hitching ride on your computer:
"Computer viruses are rampant and spam is epidemic. But the fastest-growing Internet malady is spyware, and chances are your computer is infected.
~snip~
Programs to help you with the spyware problems:
Lavasoft AD-aware (www.lavasoft.de): A highly regarded scanning and cleaning program. The company also sells a feature-rich version.

Spybot Search & Destroy (safer-networking.org): Consistently judged one of the top programs of its kind, Spybot roots out even the most shifty adversaries."

Please note, Spybot Search & Destroy is a good program, but at times it justs identifies the spyware, it doesn't always wipe out the spyware. Rhianna has the latest version but spent a lot of time running Spybot just to see CoolWWW Search and DSO Exploit show on the screen repeatedly (DSO would re-appear after the computer had apparently been "cleaned" of spyware even if the Internet had not been turned on again--raising the possibility that DSO was festering & multiplying somewhere within Rhianna's computer--this has the makings of a good horror film).

Rhianna finally went to the Start button->Find Files and typed in DSO. There were 55 DSO Exploit Zipped programs which were deleted manually. Rhianna has Webroot's SpySweeper, CW Shredder & Spybot
to deal with this problem. Shouldn't 3 programs be enough? Maybe not, perhaps in the future Lavasoft's program will be added to the anti-spy collection. As Rhianna was writing this piece, her browser failed. Luckily a draft managed to be saved.

Predictions for 2004 Transit of Venus

Predictions for 2004 Transit of Venus

"Modern Value of Venus Transits

In 1716, Halley proposed that transits of Venus could be used to measure the Sun's distance, thereby establishing the absolute scale of the Solar System and solving one of the greatest problems in astronomy at that time. The technique required that expeditions travel to the far ends of Earth so that the differing parallax of the observations could be used to derive the distance to Venus. Today the distance to the Sun and planets can be measured extremely accurately using radar, so the 2004 transit will have no scientific value in this regard. Still, it is a remarkably rare event, which was of great importance during the early history of astronomy.

With the recent discovery of the first transit of a planet around another star [Henry, Marcy, Butler, and Vogt, 1999] interest in extra-solar transits is high. The 2004 transit of Venus may be of use in developing and testing new techniques and strategies for the detection and characterization of other extra-solar planets."

"The Transit of Venus: A Rare Event. On June 8, 2004 there will be an astronomical event so rare that no one alive has ever seen it. For the first time since 1882 the planet Venus will pass directly between the Earth and the Sun, and we will see its silhouette moving across the Suns dazzling disk. Admission- $8 adult; $5 for children, HS students, college students with ID and seniors. FREE to planetarium members.
Reservations strongly recommended."

Analysis: Sic transit Venus

United Press International: Analysis: Sic transit Venus: "WASHINGTON, June 4 (UPI) -- Next Tuesday, June 8, millions of Earth-based observers -- and one or two odd satellites -- will be following a tiny black silhouette as it appears to travel across the giant surface of the sun in just a few hours.

The silhouette belongs to the planet Venus, and it will make its solar transit, as the phenomenon is called, for the first time in more than 120 years -- long enough ago that no one now alive witnessed the previous event in 1882.

The transit will occur because the orbit of Venus will put it -- for about 6 1/2 hours -- directly between Earth and the sun."

The transit can be observed, live, online at sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/sunearthday/2004/index_vthome.htm

"NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Around Wall Street, the talk is that the U.S. economy is not too hot, not too cool, but just right -- the fabled 'Goldilocks' economy that means corporate profits can continue to grow, while inflation stays tame.

But some analysts worry that won't be enough to kick stocks out of their recent range-bound mode."

Rare celestial event, the transit of Venus, will be visible early Tuesday

"Modern scientists are planning to observe the June 8 transit to learn more about planets beyond the solar system, a burgeoning field of endeavor. The data will provide a benchmark against which scientists can compare measurements taken during the transits of extrasolar planets with their parent stars.

Planetary transits result when either Mercury or Venus passes across the face of the sun as seen from Earth, a phenomenon that can occur only when one of these planets lies between Earth and the sun. Transits of Mercury are uncommon -- on average, 13 occur each century. Transits of Venus are even more rare."

Psychic: Everyone can tap into ESP

"Kate Boyer says she's psychic. She believes you can be, too.

But not the hands-on-a-crystal-ball, gaze-mystically-into-the-future type of psychic. Not the kind that sits in a dark booth at a county fair and predicts you'll win the lottery or perish in a plane crash. That's a cartoon, she says, a caricature of those with extra-sensory perception."

Elizabeth Arden--delaying the clarity amidst trading volatility

Ample - stocks, shares, news, FTSE, online trading

"Decliners Elizabeth Arden took a 13 percent dive after the cosmetics company reported revenue that fell short of expectations, and concerns over near-term earnings clarity. Sales rose 4.5 percent over year-earlier levels to $140.8 million, but missed the average analyst estimate compiled by Thomson First Call of $146 million. The company also said it was changing its fiscal year end to June 30 from January 31, prompting King & Associates analyst Gary Giblen to say it will 'delay clarity on how successful the new launches are in the critical fall and holiday 2004 and Valentine's Day 2005 seasons.'"

The Diet Detective: With effort, you can alter your body shape

Omaha.com:

"In order to get your body in top shape, experts recommend a combination of weight training, eating balanced meals (without cutting calories severely), and increasing aerobic intensity but not necessarily duration.

Weight training helps to preserve your muscle tissue, speed up your metabolic rate and increase the size of your muscles. Although you can't 'spot' train (exercise one spot on your body and have the fat melt away), you can increase the size of the muscle under the fat, which will make the fat appear leaner."
