Estee Lauder looks to the future

Cosmetics Design - Breaking News on Formulation, Packaging & Markets: " 29/04/2004 - Anti-ageing, cellulite and skin whitening are the words on everyone's lips this year at InCosmetics 2004 in Italy. As Estee Lauder reports double digit sales for its third quarter, the company's R&D vice president Dr Daniel Maes talks to CosmeticsDesign.com about where he thinks the cosmetics industry is heading."

LG Household and Healthcare taps 'kidadult' culture for brand facelift

The Korea Herald : The Nation's No.1 English Newspaper -- Cosmetics maker targets young at heart : "With a tube of lipstick or a case of eye shadow, one can go back in time. It is not by getting dolled up to look younger. Nor is it literally the case. It just requires a state of mind.
Tapping into the 'kidadult' culture, LG Household & Healthcare Ltd. has revitalized its Hercyna cosmetics into the new Tete-a-Tete (face-to-face) line, which is meant to be as much fun to apply as it is to wear.
Tete-a-Tete includes eye shadow, lipstick, makeup base and facial powder for young adults; all packaged in cases that piece together like Lego blocks.
Also, lip-gloss, named 'art-ketch,' is disguised as a brightly colored plastic toy pencil and is available in red or a combination of red and yellow or red and blue. This item is supposed to bring back memories of one's early schooldays and be fun to use, the company says. "

Economist.com: "Tactility was her byword. She loved to plunge her fingers in her own gently simmering creations, palpating and inhaling them. Her creams came in heavy jars, her lipsticks in cool metal sheaths, to advertise their quality."

Why do teens use cosmetics?

Cosmetics Design - Breaking News on Formulation, Packaging & Markets: "- 29/04/2004 - According to new research from independent market analyst Datamonitor, teenagers are using personal care products including cosmetics, makeup and hair care items for a variety of purposes; as a means to establish their sense of identity, fit in with their peers and experiment and have fun."

Telltale Lipstick: Lipstick On Air Bag Leads To Charges Against Deputy, Wife

ClickOnDetroit.com - News - Lipstick On Air Bag Leads To Charges Against Deputy, Wife: "A deputy and his wife were charged Friday after they allegedly lied about who was driving when they crashed his vehicle, Local 4 reported...Bailey, 40, and his wife, Dorothy, who was also in the car, told police at the scene that she was the driver in the crash, according to reports. But police said lipstick and other makeup marks found on the passenger-side air bag of Bailey's Ford Mustang proved that he was the driver, and not his wife." In this case, is lipstick evidence?

Broadband heading for return to metered billing
: "The UK broadband market is returning to 'metered' charging, where bandwidth will be capped or billed on a usage basis, to help reduce risk for ISPs.

Flat-rate and unmetered billing has characterised the UK broadband market for the past couple of years. But changes to BT's wholesale charging model will bring the industry more in line with the mobile market. Metered charging was tried and tested with the original rollout of narrowband access, where ISPs charged customers for the Internet minutes they were using." It's no longer all you want, eh? Beware, a flip-back like this could also happen among ISPs in the United States.

Birdwatchers of the world unite to hear a dawn symphony

The International Dawn Chorus Day --Royal Society for the Protection of Birds' Garden Birdwatch project : "Some will be hoping for the mellifluous melody of the blackbird, others the liquid warble of the robin and still more the raucous, tuneless cry of the house sparrow. Whatever the preference, the promise of a memorable dawn chorus will be enough to attract hundreds of people this weekend for an annual communion that is drawing a growing number of avian devotees."

The Treasuries were stripped of early gains

MSN Money - Breaking News: Jobs Outlook Strips Treasuries of Gains
: "Analysts always caution that the various indicators of consumer sentiment have proved terrible at predicting actual consumer behavior in recent years. Thus spending boomed in the first quarter even while confidence was apparently fading. "

Hmmm, "The Treasuries were stripped of early gains"--that almost has a meter to it. One could write a poem around that line, it wouldn't quite stand up to Byron's "The Destruction of Sennacherib," but it could possibly make an interesting read. So, what's up with the Fed? Are their indicators flopping about or what? The Feds are itching to raise the rates, but Alan Greenspan needs to really analyze those indicators--more than that! Greenspan's policies would make more sense if he had a pack of Tarots of Marseille

Avril's Libra-Libra decanate is double on the Venus as seen in her ability to express feelings about relationships in new ways. These two share a love of music and a love of Australian animals--friendship is in the wings. Keep an eye on these two! Will Harry be her Sk8ter boi?

Look who's giving Japan's cosmetics market a makeover

Foreigners look to make over Japan’s cosmetics market
"With powerful brand names and global hit products, Western makers now take up a majority of the space on our cosmetics floor," said a spokesman at Isetan, whose flagship Tokyo department store is Japan's top seller of cosmetics.
Estee Lauder, the US maker of Clinique and M-A-C brands, says it has a top 20-25 per cent share of Japan's luxury cosmetics market based on sales at the top 180 major department stores...While Estee Lauder focuses on the prestige end of the market, Maybelline maker L'Oreal is moving towards the cheaper and bigger mass market, although with a difference. The maker of high-end Lancome make-up hopes to bring an upscale image to its mass-appeal products like L'Oreal Paris by offering specialised services like individual counselling. "

"BOTTICELLI AND FILIPPINO
GRACE AND UNREST IN FIFTEENTH-CENTURY FLORENTINE PAINTING

Florence has organised an extraordinary exhibition to celebrate Sandro Botticelli (Florence 1445 - 1510). His works will be displayed along with those of his pupil and friend Filippino Lippi (1457-1504), in the year marking the fifth centenary of the latter's death.
The exhibition is subtitled: Grace and Unrest. Grace because the fifteenth century selected grace -that is intellectual elegance and the refined representation of sentiment - as its aesthetic emblem. Unrest because the century closed on the note of uncertainty and anguish, overshadowed by the apocalyptic threats of Gerolamo Savonarola, the charismatic and tragic prophet of the eclipse of Humanist ideals."

Rising oil prices splash through whole economy

WSJ News: Rising oil prices splash through whole economy : " Petroleum-based items range across every aspect of their lives: paint rollers, nail polish, crayons, combs, mops, cameras, tents, electrician's tape, fertilizers, sun glasses, bandages, curtains, umbrellas, deodorant and many other items. <
Petroleum-based products are a timely topic as the price of a barrel of crude oil hovers at about $36, about $10 more than its four-year average. Higher oil costs raise the specter that price increases could ripple through the American economy and across American lifestyles, from fruits and vegetables - even maple syrup - to things like plastics and other products that are transported using petroleum-based fuels. <
While some consumers may be able to easily reduce their use of petroleum-based products or change driving habits, others may find themselves cutting back on purchases as prices rise. <"

Techworld.com - Netsky.V climbs through upstairs Windows

Techworld.com - Netsky.V climbs through upstairs Windows: "However, history has shown that large numbers of PCs - mostly belonging to home users and small businesses - are left unpatched, and lack a firewall or up-to-date anti-virus software, allowing worms such as last month's Netsky.Q to flourish. Worms such as Blaster are expected to continue to spread via unpatched machines for years to come, creating an increasingly hostile environment for corporate networks.
Like previous variants, Netsky.V appears as a 'Mail delivery failed' message, and spreads using e-mail addresses in the victim machine's address book. "

Other widespread versions of the Netsky worm have infected users by tempting them to double-click on an email attachment, but Netsky-V exploits security loopholes in Microsoft's software that mean users can be hit just by reading an email."

Dante's Commedia and the Tarot

Tarot.com :: Tarot, Astrology, Numerology & I-Ching

A question to explore is: how did tarot spread? (and to so many places during the medieval age) and how did it take root with the people? It must have been popular among the ordinary classes in order for it to have survived. Dr. Robert O'Neil, in his essay, "Dante's Commedia and the Tarot" would offer a clue in his observation that
"The Commedia was written, not in the Latin of the intellectuals and aristocracy, but in the venacular of the card-players." This is a crucial point. Bear in mind that the works of Shakespeare, written in the vernacular, have remained popular throughout the ages as opposed to Restoration Comedy for example.

The Introduction of Playing-Cards to Europe

"A brief summary of European playing-card history follows. Cards were introduced into Italy and Spain around 1370. They most likely came from Egypt...The idea that Gypsies introduced cards to Europe is contradicted by the fact that cards were known in Europe for about 40 years before the first appearance of Gypsies."

Okay, who then brought the cards from Egypt?

Unemployment Claims Make Big Jump: so what's in the cards for fiscal health?

iWon Money & Investing: "The rebound in job creation is coming just in time, many analysts believe, because growing employment is needed to raise incomes as the impact of President Bush's tax cuts and waves of mortgage refinancing begin to wane."

Will the rebound in job creation tide over the newly 30,000 unemployed plus the existing unemployed? Let's see how much consumer confidence they'll be at the November election.

"Various signs do point to stronger growth and a resurgent labor market. But economists have begun to worry that the Federal Reserve may move sooner than expected to raise interest rates because inflation pressures, long dormant, have started to reappear."
That's just what U.S. Citizens need, unemployment plus higher interest rates *sarcasm*

"More cost-cutting companies are hiring workers in other countries to do jobs formerly held by U.S. employees. But in a painful twist, some employers are asking the workers they're laying off to train their foreign replacements — having them dig their own unemployment graves.

Almost one in five information technology workers has lost a job or knows someone who lost a job after training a foreign worker, according to a new survey by the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers. The study is the first to quantify how widespread the practice is. "

    CNN.com - DVD fanaticism: It's what's for dinner - Apr 6, 2004

CNN.com - DVD fanaticism: It's what's for dinner - Apr 6, 2004: "DVD has crossed over. It's not a fad, phenomenon or quirky bit of the film culture. It's causing rental stores to rethink their tactics, consumers to plan their budgets around DVD release schedules and casual fans to become collectors. But there's some shifty marketing rhetoric to consider: At what point do DVD buyers say 'enough is enough' and bring about a more focused and consumer-friendly way of having home video evolve? There's the ever-present threat of DVD titles reaching the incredibly expensive prices that VHS carried to keep the rental market robust. There's new technology around the corner threatening to unseat the current format.
DVD is coming up to a bizarre crossroads. I hope the consumer benefits, but until then, I'll see you folks in line."

If you had a question related to real estate and the 7 of Cups (especially from the Thoth Tarot Deck)
was revealed (either dignified/upright or ill-dignified/upsidedown), this would be a classic example of the cards warning against a potential situation (or investment) becoming an engulfing quagmire--a choice with serious flaws. The 7 of Cups represents this swamp that will bog you down big time. The card would also be a warning to the swindler who was trying to bamboozle people into buying a swamp: his deceit, though he thought his plan was cunning, became his downfall.
