"W hen you have to script exactly how two presidential candidates will approach each other and shake hands before a joint appearance, it's pretty obvious nobody will confuse the event with the Lincoln-Douglas debates.

Gracious, the highly sterilized ``debate'' Thursday between George W. Bush and John Kerry will be lucky to rise to the intellectual standards of Hannity and Colmes.

Oddly enough, the two candidates to lead the free world - men who promise bold, visionary, courageous presidencies - had to forge a debate contract more full of whereases, clauses, subclauses and sub-subclauses than Bill Gates' prenuptial agreement before they would agree to sit for questions from that Grand Inquisitor, Jim Lehrer.
